Sorry there’s no way to sugarcoat this one. If you don’t actually sit down (or stand) and write you will never be a writer.
Writing is a hard job and you need to take your victories where you find them. Did you meet your word- or page-count goal today? Mark it as a victory. Did you send out a query letter? Another victory. Sold your first article, column, book or novel? Time to celebrate your victory!
Ask yourself what is it about you and your writing that’s unique. What perspective do you bring that no one else does? Use that lens to create the story or article only you can write.
Sure there are novels that go on for 150,000 words and nonfiction articles that top the 3,000-word mark, but these are the exceptions, not the rule. Keep your writing tight and make every word count. After all do you really need 10 different words to describe a certain shade of blue when the word “cobalt” will suffice?
