Sometimes when I am writing a story -- be it a news story or a fiction story -- it’s sometimes hard to tell what works and what doesn’t. I’m not talking about the big, overall story components but, rather, the little bits of nuanced detail. Perhaps it’s the way you’ve structured your narrative
And sometimes when the deadline is tight enough I may take a shortcut or two --- maybe the reader won’t notice if I gloss over this detail or don’t explain that item fully. Almost as if I just expect the reader to be able to figure out what I was thinking in my head.
Which is why it’s important to have great editors behind your project. They can see your vision. They can also see the problems inherent within the story and offer solutions.
Over the years I’ve been blessed to work with some truly wonderful editors. I’ve learned quite a bit from them, not just in my own writing but also as an editor myself. (Truth be told, I love sitting down with new writers and seeing their raw material and working with them to revise their story and their words.)
Luckily for me I am working with really talented editors. The editor for my news articles on Chabad.org has a way of maneuvering a word or two here and there or suggesting the addition of just one more thing that really adds a sparkle to the narrative. Thank you Carin!
Which leads me to the book update. I just got my revisions letter -- more like an email with suggested changes -- and each one of them was spot on. Most weren’t major changes and can be easily accomplished. One or two will require some retooling on my part and some were just clever enough to make me say -- huh, why didn’t I think of that.
Case in point -- chapters one and two will be flipping spots in my story. My original chapter two will now open the story so the readers will be privy to something the characters don’t know and will then be reading in anticipation for this reveal. I think it’s a great idea and sorry I didn’t think of it sooner!
I still don’t have an anticipated release date, but revisions on the book are due in a few weeks. I will keep you all posted and thanks for all your support!
And if you have an editor who has really inspired you, take a minute to drop them a line and say thanks or feel free to post your thoughts in the comments section.
Happy Holidays to all.
